US Ambassador to Pakistan Cameron Munter on Wednesday met Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar and Foreign Secretary Salman Bashir separately and urged the swift recovery of Warren Weinstein, an American national who was kidnapped in Lahore on August 13.
“During his meetings with Khar and Salman at the Foreign Office, Munter asked for the earliest possible recovery of the kidnapped US citizen. He also discussed the possibility of the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) joining the ongoing investigation into the abduction of Weinstein,” said a Pakistani diplomat who did not wish to be named. Pakistani officials at the Foreign Ministry told the US ambassador that law enforcement agencies were trying their best to recover the US citizen, the diplomat said. A statement by the Foreign Office said that Munter had met Khar but it did not mention the US ambassador’s meeting with the foreign secretary.
“The two sides discussed bilateral relations and highlighted the importance of a strategic relationship based on mutual respect and mutual interests,” it said.
