Amir Khan can take down Morales or Matthysse

For Amir Khan, winning the coveted WBC title should be as easy as his ABC. After the WBC stripped title holder Timothy Bradley of the prestigious green belt, Erik Morales and Lucas Matthysse will slug it out for the vacant crown. The pair will meet on the undercard of Floyd Mayweather Junior’s clash with Victor Ortiz in Las Vegas on September 17 and Khan is already eyeing up a unification clash with the winner. Khan has the WBA and IBF light-welterweight titles and wants to get his hands on the WBC belt before he steps up to 147lbs next year. Khan’s US promoter Golden Boy is putting on Morales-Matthysse and is already talking about a possible December date for a showdown between the Bolton fighter and the victor. Fighting Morales or Matthysse, who has lost two of his last three fights, would present fewer problems for Khan than the unbeaten Bradley and the Athens silver medallist feels his big rival has blown it. “We all know that Bradley just doesn’t want to fight me,” he said. “He doesn’t come to the table to take the fight on. The WBC has stripped Bradley of the title and I think that looks really, really bad to be stripped of a title because he doesn’t want to face me. “You know he’s 27. This is the best time for him. This is the prime time for him. If he’s only fighting once a year I think that’s quite bad for someone at his age.” Khan is fasting in observance of Ramadan and will soon go on pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia. When he returns to the gym towards the end of next month, he should know the identity of his next opponent. He prefers Morales and the veteran multi-titled Mexican would be a prized scalp, even though he is past his best. The one-time conqueror of Manny Pacquiao has reinvented himself as a light-welterweight since returning to the ring last year after three years out and is a huge name on the other side of the Atlantic. “In Morales-Matthysse you’ve got two names there who are good fighters,” said Khan.
