Flood affected people

Hundreds of thousands of people are marooned in the heaviest rain-hit areas in the home district of Dr Fahmida Mirza, Speaker National Assembly, and her thundering husband Dr Zulfiqar Mirza, in Badin district among others.

Several breaches in canals and drains such as murderous Left Bank Outfall Drain, which is in fact a gift of previous PPP government remain unplugged, have inundated hundreds of thousands of villages.

Everything including life, limb, livestock, infrastructure, and crops standing on thousands of acres, has been hit hard. So far more than 40 people are reported dead and hundreds injured.

A large number of displaced people who are passing their sleepless nights and days under the open sky along canal banks and other higher places have not received any government help. Pregnant women, children, newborns and elderly people are reported dying of starvation, non-availability of potable water and mosquitoes.

In this dismal situation, the heart rendering words one hungry teenage girl Shamul from one flooded village of Badin district still echo in my ears who questioned, “Where is Baji Dr Fahmida and Dr Zulfiqar Mirza who used to come to our village and ask for votes and rallies in their support?”

I know that their Baji Fahmida and Dr Sahib may not have time for these ill-fated peopled but humanity caring international community and relief organisations – many of them still busy in the restoration and rehabilitation of last year’s super floods in Sindh – will hear the cries of such innocent girls and come to their rescue and rehabilitation in the name of humanity.
