The Crime Investigation Department (CID) of Sindh Police arrested a “suspected Taliban commander” from Karachi’s Kemari area, who was later released on court orders after it was proven that the CID had considerably exaggerated the charges, a private TV channel reported on Tuesday.
The CID had presented the suspect as “a close associate” of slain Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan commander Baitullah Mehsud and Maulvi Fazal Ahmed. However, sources said no solid evidence could be found against the suspect, named Fazal Mehsud, and he was therefore arrested for possession of illegal weapons.
CID Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Fayaz Khan said Mehsud had been produced in the District West court, which released it citing insufficient evidence. The CID had claimed that Mehsud had been living in Kemari for the last several years where he collected funds for the Taliban. Sources said the CID had grossly exaggerated the charges and presented Mehsud as a Taliban commander.
