The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has approved a grant of $155 million for promoting education in Sindh, said Education Secretary Siddique Memon on Monday.
Memon said this in a meeting with Education Minister Pir Mazharul Haq and US Consul General William Martin at Haq’s office where Martin assured all his support for the cause of education in the province.
Memon also said that the USAID grant would be used for reconstruction of schools and provision of furniture and other essential educational equipments to the flood-hit areas.
The assistance would be utilised to improve the quality of education and to enhance availability of educational assistance to the people living in the remote areas, he added.
He said that the previous governments had inducted teachers in the Education Department who had little interest in their work and caused a deteriorating impact on the entire education system.
The civil society, parents and all sections of the society would have to make concerted efforts for improving the standard of education in the province, he added.
He also said that the current rate of education in the province is 56 percent, whereas it is much lower in the rural areas and far worse among girls.
He appealed to all the sections of the society to ensure that their female children not only get enrolled in schools, but also complete their education.
