Vegetables prices wobble uncertainly

During the second week of the holy month of Ramadan, the prices of most of vegetables in the Sunday bazaars of the city witnessed a slight decrease against the previous week’s rates.
However, the prices of potato, onion and ladyfinger witnessed increase. The prices of tomato, fruit and chicken remained stable. The prices of potato witnessed an increase of Rs 4 per kg. This week potato was sold at Rs 36 while its rate was Rs 32 per kg on the last Sunday. Onion was sold at Rs 22 per kg, witnessing an increase of Rs 2.
During the visit to all the three Sunday bazaars of the city, Pakistan Today found a large number of customers. According to the rate list, tomato was sold at Rs 32 and lemon at Rs 120 as compared to previous week’s price of Rs 170. It is relevant to note here that during the last three weeks the lemon prices kept fluctuating while during the last week it registered a 100 percent increase.
This Sunday, black pepper was sold at Rs 72 against the previous week’s rate of Rs 80. The prices of ginger and garlic also witnessed an increase of Rs 14 per kg. The prices of most of fruits remained stable. This week apple (Gajani) was sold at Rs 100, apple (China-golden) at Rs 180, Mango (Sindhri) at Rs 80 and banana at Rs 70.
Talking to Pakistan Today, several customers expressed their dissatisfaction over the prices of the Sunday bazaars and urged the government to take concrete steps to lower the rates of vegetables and fruits on permanent basis. On the other hand, the stall holders of the Sunday bazaars were of the view that though there were a large number of customers, sale remained low as most of them were window shoppers and ran away after asking prices.
