To spite others

Sindh is once again in the grip of floods. Other than from the Indus, major contribution to these floods is from the rivers Kabul, Chitral, Swat, Haro and Sohan. Bhasha dam being to the north will not control these floods, which will go on increasing in intensity every year because of global warming caused by burning of fossil fuels like oil, gas and coal.

Only Kalabagh dam, to the south of these rivers, can moderate their floods. The people of Sindh have a choice to go on suffering from these floods on an incremental basis or agree to the construction of Kalabagh dam.

Sindh is denying itself the additional 2.2 million acre feet of water it cannot get from anywhere else, just to stop Punjab from getting an equal amount from the Indus, actually from the surplus stored water. This is tantamount to cutting the nose to spite the face.
