The Law Ministry would soon write to the chief justice of Pakistan asking for the formation of a judicial commission to investigate into the allegations leveled by Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif against President Asif Ali Zardari, former law minister Babar Awan said on Monday. Shahbaz had said he felt a life threat at the hands of the president for “exposing the federal government’s corruption”.
Addressing a press conference, Awan denies the allegations against President Zardari and added that the government would ask the chief justice to hold a judicial inquiry into the allegations. The PPP senator condemned the Punjab chief minister’s statement about danger to his life from President Zardari and called it highly irresponsible.
He said, “The government is taking it very seriously,” adding that, ministry concerned had been asked to write a letter to the CJ to form a judicial commission for investigation into the statement. The former law minister said there should be no place for personal enmity or hatred in democracy and national politics. He said in the democratic era, the PPP had empowered the opposition to an extent which had no precedence in the history.
In this connection, he referred to unopposed election of leader of the opposition as the chairman of the Public Accounts Committee.
Referring to PAC Chairman Nisar Ali Khan’s apprehensions that the government was creating hurdles in the committee’s task, Awan asked Nisar to elaborate on the allegation.
He made it clear that the accounts reviewed by the PAC so far related to the Musharraf era and the PPP had no concern with them. He also pointed out that the PAC had so far not taken up the latest report of the auditor general of Pakistan.
Awan assured the PAC chairman that the government would not create any obstacles in his way of the committee’s task, rather would facilitate it in every way.
He said Zardari had extended invitation to all the stakeholders for resolving the issues confronting the nation. He said the PPP government was indulging in politics of reconciliation and not revenge.
To a question, he said President Zardari enjoyed complete confidence of the PPP and the people of Pakistan.
Shahbaz Sharif's statement is irresponsible. Cheap populist politics must not be pursued. Personally, I do not think such allegations will help N League in any manner. It will be right if the government opts for a judicial inquiry.
