Unidentified armed men gunned down a local journalist Munir Shakir in Khuzdar, some 250 kilometers south-east of Quetta, on Sunday.
Shakir was working for a Baloch news channel Sabz Baat Balochistan and was also associated with Online news agency. The journalist was coming home from press club when two armed motorcyclists opened fire on him, killing him on the spot. He was shifted to a local hospital where doctors pronounced him dead. No militant organisation has so far claimed responsibility for his death.
Four journalists including two Khuzdar Press Club presidents Faiz Sasooli and Mohammad Khan Sasooli have also been killed during the past two years. Journalists of Khuzdar announced three days of mourning over Shakir’s murder and demanded immediate arrest of the culprits.
Balochistan Union of Journalists (BUJ) President Esa Tareen and Secretary General Hammadullah Seipad said 13 journalists had been killed in separate incidents throughout Balochistan in the last 3 years but no one had been arrested yet.
