The 65th Independence Day of the country was celebrated in the city with traditional zeal and national spirit on Sunday. The day dawned in the provincial capital with the 21-gun salute and special prayers were arranged at mosques for the prosperity and development of the country.
Flag-hoisting ceremonies were organised at all garrisons and units of the armed forces. The change of guard ceremony was held at the Mazar-e-Quaid, where a contingent of cadets from the Pakistan Naval Academy took over guard duties at the mausoleum. The chief guest of the ceremony, Commodore Muhammad Abid Rana, inspected the guard of honour and laid a wreath and offered fateha at the mausoleum.
Later, Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ebad Khan, Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah visited mausoleum to pay homage to of the Quaid-e-Azam. They were accompanied by Home Minister Manzoor Wassan, Local Bodies Minister Agha Siraj Durrani, City Administrator Fazlur Rehman, DCO Muhammad Hussain Syed, MQM leaders Sardar Ahmed, Raza Haroon, Babar Ghauri, Abdul Haseeb, Rauf Siddiqi, PML-F leader Imtiaz Sheikh, ANP leader Ameer Nawab Khan and PML-Q leaders Haleem Siddiqi and Ejaz Sheerazi.
DCO Mohammed Hussain Syed hoisted the national flag at the City Government headquarters at the Civic Centre. The representatives of the three armed forces also laid floral wreaths and offered fateha at mausoleum. Students of various educational institutions gathered at the mausoleum to participate in various contests organised to celebrate the day.
Different educational institutions, sports organisations and welfare bodies also organised rallies, seminars and other events.
