Taking strict notice of the death of four lion cubs at the Karachi Zoo, city Administrator Fazlur Rehman has appointed EDO Revenue Ghanwar Leghari as the inquiry officer to probe the incident and submit the report within 15 days.
Besides ascertaining the reasons behind the African lion cubs’ death, the inquiry would also include the birth and death of animals during the last two years at the Karachi Zoo and the Safari Park.
The inquiry officer has also been assigned to check the record of the transfer of animals at both the places during this period and the exchange of newborn animals as “gifts” between their managements and different cities, NGOs and other countries.
According to the Karachi Zoo administration, a pair of African lions was brought to the zoo after they were confiscated by the Sindh Wildlife Department.
The pair gave birth to four cubs on August 7. The zoo administration claimed that they were given care and the necessary treatment, but three of them died on August 12, while one of them was killed by the lioness.
