The city is all set to celebrate the country’s 64th Independence Day today (Sunday) with zeal and fervour.
Flag-hoisting ceremonies would be held at various places while seminars would also be organised to pay tribute to the country’s founding fathers and to pledge to work for the country’s progress and prosperity. More than 50 functions would also be held at various educational institutions and other places to celebrate the occasion. In order to provide foolproof security arrangements, more than 10,000 policemen would perform duty. Section 144 has been imposed in the city to maintain law and order while traffic police have also geared up to maintain a smooth traffic flow. Motorcycles without silencers and one-wheeling are totally prohibited.
The momentum for Independence Day picked up on Saturday, as citizens thronged stalls to buy national flags, stickers and banners. Public and private buildings were decorated with lights and the national flag was also hoisted on buildings. Youth were seen preparing green and white clothes to celebrate the occasion. Nimra, 12, while painting a flag on her cheek said, “I am happy that before Eid I am also celebrating an event and on this happy occasion, we should pray to God for the country’s progress.”
Citizen Masoom, talking to Pakistan Today, said, “Every year we celebrate this day with zeal and zest and make lofty claims but do nothing after the day passes.” Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif would attend a flag-hoisting ceremony at Hazoori Bagh near Lahore Fort today. On Saturday, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) organised a candle-lighting ceremony at Minar-e-Pakistan.
