Karachi District Coordination Officer (DCO) Mohammad Hussain Syed directed the deputy district officers (DDOs) of the city government’s Revenue Department on Friday to launch a crackdown against hoarders and illegal profiteers in their respective areas.
“All possible efforts should be made for facilitating the poor and the middle class with the subsidised flour scheme,” he said while addressing a meeting regarding price control at his office on Friday.
The meeting was attended by Executive District Officer (EDO) Revenue Ghanwar Leghari, Additional EDO Revenue Matanat Ali Khan, district officers and DDOs Revenue.
The DCO instructed the officials to ensure surprise raids in markets and bachat bazaars to control profiteering on the town level. He said the rates of utility items were fixed after the consent of traders’ representatives; therefore, they must strictly implement it.
The DCO urged the DDOs to play an active role in controlling the prices of daily use items so that the people could be provided with more facilities during the holy month of Ramazan. He directed them to impose fine on the shopkeepers if found they are found charging excessive rates and send them to jail if they were caught second time in the act.
He also told DDOs to coordinate with the Food Department and flour mills so that subsidised flour is delivered to the low-income areas of the city. “Every town should receive eight to 10 trucks of flour bags on a daily basis. Traders involved in illegal storage of subsidised flour will face legal action,” he added.
