3 police officers suspended following Taliban escape

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government on Saturday suspended Peshawar Superintendent Police (SP) Sahibzada Shah Jehan, Peshawar Deputy Superintendent Police (DSP) Ajmal Khan and Peshawar Central Jail officer Dr Iftikhar after two under-trial militants were rescued by unidentified attackers from police custody on Friday.
According to details of the incident, three police constables Muhammad Tariq, Jafar and Rais were killed when two under trial prisoners Zakeem and Nadeem Abbas were being taken back to Peshawar Central Jail after their examination in Khyber College of Dentistry.
As per an official hand out, the government had constituted a high level committee headed by SMBR Waqar Ayub which would probe into the incident and submit its report within 15 days. Committee members comprised a senior District Management Group (DMG) Officer Dr Ehsan ul Haq, Peshawar Commissioner Akbar Khan and Special Branch Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Muhammad Ashraf Noor.
Reliable sources told Pakistan Today that Khyber Pakthunkhwa Chief Minister (CM) Amir Haider was furious after reports that two dangerous militants had escaped from police custody. The chief minister, who was in Islamabad when the incident happened, held a meeting with Chief Secretary Ghulam Dastgir Khan and expressed severe resentment over the lapse on the part of concerned quarters. He directed stern action against responsible officials.
