Malik appeals for calm as tension engulfs GB

Federal Interior Minister Rehman Malik Friday took notice of violent protests in Gilgit Baltistan and directed inspector general to submit a report.
Furthermore, he called upon people of Gilgit Baltistan to stay calm and maintain order. Nobody, he said, would be allowed to disturb the law and order situation and damage public properties. He also ordered Gilgit Scouts to aid the police in bringing the situation under control.
On Thursday, violence broke out when police opened fire on protestors, killing two people. Tension began when flood-hit people of Ataabad Lake were holding a protest during GB Chief Minister Mehdi Shah’s visit to Hunzanagar.
Enraged by the police shelling and death of two persons, protestors torched several vehicles and buildings. Later, the chief minister suspended a DSP and policemen involved in the firing. He also announced Rs.600,000 as help to victims’ families.
However, the situation remains tense in the area. There is a complete strike in Hunza, where all private and public schools and government offices are lying closed.
