The Rawal Dam authorities opened the spillway of the reservoir on Thursday after the dam’s water level rose sufficiently owing to heavy rains in the twin cities last night. The authorities opened the spillway up to one foot to decrease the water level in the dam. The purpose of opening the spillway is to create space for more rainwater as the Metrological Department has forecasted heavy rains in the next few days.
An official said the water level of the dam had risen up to 1,747.5 feet while the capacity of the dam was 1,752.5 feet. The authorities had informed the people living near the catchments to adopt precautionary measures and transfer their valuables to safe places. The official said that if the rains continued, they would open the spillway up to two feet.
