Punjab University (PU) BA/ BSc result announcement ceremony to be held on August 12 would again be deprived of the presence of prominent personalities as Governor Sardar Latif Khosa, Punjab Chief Minister (CM) Shahbaz Shrif and other senior officials refused to come, Pakistan Today learnt on Tuesday.
Despite continued efforts by the PU administration, it is the second time that no prominent government official would be present at the result announcement and award distribution ceremony. Although PU Examination Controller Dr Liaquat’s claimed that the CM might attend the ceremony, the varsity’s official press release announced that Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Mujahid Kamran would be the chief guest on the occasion.
Sources said hooliganism by religious elements and firing incidents at the varsity were keeping the governor and CM away from PU’s affairs. Firing at PU Syndicate Member Dr Shaukat Ali’s house especially shocked government officials and poor security at the varsity was the reason why they were avoiding the ceremony, they added. This year around 153,688 students from all over Pakistan appeared in the examinations.
Sources said it was the VC’s last result ceremony as his term at the PU was ending and the absence of governor or CM would disappoint both the students as welll as the administration.
According to a PU teacher, in the past governors and CMs used to announce financial grants for top students and teachers as a token of appreciation, however no such honourarium would be given this year as government officials refused to attend the ceremony.
On the other hand students have requested the varsity administration to convince the CM or governor to come to tomorrow’s ceremony.
