City administrator reviews monsoon measures

City administrator Fazlur Rehman directed the city government officers on Tuesday to give a final shape to the arrangements for the expected monsoon rains. He gave the orders during a meeting with DCO Karachi Mohammad Hussain Syed, town administrators and city government officials. Earlier, the administrator visited the Gujjar Nullah, the Orangi Nullah and the Banaras Chowk flyover and also inspected the construction work of a storm-water drain at the Ziauddin Roundabout. On the occasion, he directed the officials concerned to make arrangements for drainage of rain water from the area. The administrator said that the city government and town officers have prepared a record of places that face the problem of rainwater accumulation and all the required machinery and manpower must utilised to ensure that the residents do not face any inconvenience. Rehman also directed the city government departments including Municipal Services and Works and Services to ensure coordinated efforts for effective monsoon arrangements. He also stressed the need to pay special attention to the city’s slum areas. He said that a special cell for monitoring the city’s major drains should be set up. He said that city administration possesses vast experience of dealing with civic affairs. “The town administration should immediately make their departments functional, especially the solid waste management, which needs to be activated in advance so that the garbage produced in the city can be dispatched to landfill sites before the rains start,” he added.
