Torrential rains coupled with strong winds wreaked havoc across the country on Monday, inundating roads in several feet of rainwater in places owing to poor drainage arrangements by the departments responsible, and causing 12 deaths in rain-related accidents.
The Presidency, Parliament House, the basement of the Supreme Court building and several other areas and roads of the federal capital and Rawalpindi were flooded, leading to massive traffic jams at almost every avenue. Four people were killed in the federal capital and adjoining areas in rain related incidents such as collapsed roofs and road accidents.
Meanwhile, Lahore experienced the fiercest bout of this year’s monsoon season with 130 millimetres of rainfall recorded in the city. Four people were killed and seven were injured in rain related incidents. In Daska, two children of a family were killed and five injured when the roof of a mud and stone house collapsed during the night because of the heavy rain in Jamkay Cheema village. Two siblings were also killed in Sialkot when the roof of their house collapsed.
