Exhibition to raise awareness about laws against sexual harassment tomorrow

An exhibition to raise awareness about laws against sexual harassment will open at the Arts Council of Pakistan on Monday.
The exhibition has been organised by Alliance Against Sexual Harassment (AASHA) as part of a series of exhibitions it plans to hold in different cities to also highlight its efforts that resulted in making sexual harassment a punishable offence, through amendment in Section 509 of the Pakistan Penal Code.
It was through the concerted efforts of civil society, women organisations and the media that a code of conduct was developed and a bill against harassment at work place was adopted by the parliament in 2010.
Activists believe that series of measures are required for implementation of the law and curb the practice of women harassment in the country.
The organisers have also arranged a pre-exhibition seminar. It will be addressed by MPA Humaira Alwani, Justice (retd) Majida Rizvi, journalist Qamarul Hasan, Tehreek-e-Niswan’s Sheema Kirmani and Dawood Usman Jakhora of the PCCI.
Senior trade unionist and Executive Director, Pakistan Institute of Labour and Research (PILER), Karamat Ali, will make a detailed presentation on contribution of female workers to the national economy.
