Saying an appeal against the suspension of his party membership was “below dignity”, PPP leader Enver Baig resigned from the PPP on Saturday and asked party Secretary General Jahangir Badr to immediately accept the resignation.
Leader of the House in the Senate and PPP Islamabad chapter President Syed Nayyer Hussain Bokhari had suspended Baig’s basic membership on Monday following his meeting with PML-N President Nawaz Sharif.
In his letter written to Baig, which was released to the media as well, Bokhari had held Baig responsible for “working against the party interest and policy”.
Without defining the details of the violation of the party policy, Bokhari had restrained Baig from representing the party at any forum.
However, Baig did not respond to Bokhari’s letter and addressed his letter to the PPP secretary general. With reference to Bokhari’s letter, Baig said the letter was indeed a “peerless gem” for a connoisseur’s collection as it was amusingly vague, levelled no specific charge and could even be questioned on grounds of procedural impropriety.
“I intend to do no such thing as I have other more substantive issues on mind… With the tragic demise of PPP chairwoman Benazir Bhutto, this engaging trait has disappeared, and people like me (and many others like me) who worked close with her find it extremely difficult to continue with our association with the party,” Baig said.
“The letter gives me an option of an appeal, but I consider it below my dignity to appeal against the suspension…. I herewith tender my resignation from the basic membership of the party and request that my resignation be accepted with immediate effect,” he added.
However, Baig paid glowing tribute to the former PPP chairwoman Benazir Bhutto, saying that after the death of PPP founder Zulfikar Ali Bhutlo, she remained the flaming thread of scarlet in the otherwise dull and drab fabric of the party.
“A remarkable lady of bold colours and no pastels, she aroused strong passions on our political canvas, and delighted as much in the fury of her foes as she did in the adoration of her friends. With her uncanny sagacity, worldly wisdom and matchless political acumen, she brought to the task of running both the party and the government a repertoire of superb accomplishment which endeared her and the Party to the broad masses of the people,” Baig said.
