Supreme Court Bar Association President Asma Jahangir has expressed horror at the declining law and order situation in Karachi, and said that by all accounts the situation is complex but a large part of violence stems from political polarization and escalating ethnic and religions intolerance.
In a statement, Asma said that all this was being whipped up to capture some form of power in the country. She cautioned that if the country descends into chaos, no one would be safe. She condemned the practice of “bhattas,” which is being used by all political parties in Karachi to arm and recruit cadres of their parties.
“Apart from expressing its concern, the Parliament must form an all party committee on the issue who should visit the Karachi city, hold public meetings and call for an end to use of violence,” she said. The people expect the parliament to remain proactive and not leave all issues to be solved to chance, she said, adding nor should the Parliament transfer all its burden to other institutions or else not expect that their sovereignty will not be tarnished.
The SCBA president said that institutions earn respect not through legislating on their powers but by the effective use of these (powers).
Asma bibi is a wise lady. I hope all concerned quarters will give ear to what she is demanding from our legislators.
