As seven more people were killed in Karachi on Tuesday, Interior Minister Rehman Malik has said that everything has a limit, enough is enough, the government is going to take extra-ordinary measures to restore peace and normalcy in Karachi, private television channels reported.
After presiding a high level meeting at the National Crisis Management Cell (NCMC), the federal minister told journalists that terrorists had tested the government enough and action would now be taken against them. “We are fully determined to take stern action against miscreants and outlaws who want to destabilise Pakistan,” he said.
The meeting was attended by Sindh Home Minister Manzoor Wassan, Sindh Rangers Acting Director General Brigadier Zafar Iqbal and Sindh Inspector General of Police Wajid Ali Khan Durrani. During the meeting, Rehman Malik said that 26 people were killed in various parts of Karachi on Monday by terrorists who targeted all including Urdu, Pushto and Seraiki speaking people.
“We are committed to take action with force against the law breakers,” he said. The government will not allow anti-state elements to destabilise the country, he said, and added that people know who were the miscreants. “Now even our children and mothers are being targeted,” he pointed out.
The minister said that a strategy has been prepared to take action against 90,000 Afghanis living in Karachi with fake documents and also government would check the illegal Bengali immigrants as well. “We will bring peace in Karachi at all cost and no one will be allowed to make the city hostage at gun point,” he added.

Later on, Sindh Home Minister Manzoor Wassan said that the federal government has been lending a helping hand to restore peace in Karachi. He said that the operative parts of the operation could not be disclosed beforehand. He said that everyone would come to know within three days that what sorts of action were being taken for restoring peace.

  1. Situation is Karachi is extremely critical. It used to be a city of peace till Zia appeared on the scene. All through his eleven year rule, his supreme obsession was PPP. In order to weaken PPP in Sindh, he promoted MQM. After that, Karachi ceased to be what it was.

During the second tenure of Benazir Bhutto, Naseerullah Babar did a great job in restoring law and order as well as getting rid of bhata mafia to a great extent.

It is a tragedy in our country that when it comes to politicking, the politicians, agencies and judiciary play it no holds barred. The good work done by Naseerullah Babar became one of the reasons to dismiss BB's government. Now things have gone out of control and we can do nothing more than complain.

It may not be out of place to mention here the problem of energy shortage in Pakistan. A lot of energy projects were completed during BB's second tenure and many more were planned. Nawaz Sharif scandalised those also. (I am nobody to exonerate anybody regarding kickbacks issue.) When Nawaz came into power, he scuttled all pending energy projects. Unlike Benazir, he never had any vision of our future energy needs. I wonder if scandalised energy projects had not been set-up, where would we be standing today?

We have talked a lot about hydel power. Nawaz Sharif's mentor made Kalabagh controversial to divert public attention away from elections. No previous government moved a single inch to at least start work on other non-controversial projects. It goes to the credit of Asif Zardari that at least he has taken a start. Hydel power will take a long time to come in the national grid but somebody had to take a start.

Had it not been for self-serving politics of Nawaz Sharif, I feel we would not have had energy problem today nor would we be faced with the Karachi situation.

  2. when are they going to take action… and what the hell have they been waiting for???

  3. Even if entire Karachi is killed to save 'kursi and dolat' of PPP-Z,MQM,ANP,MLQ,the target killing will continue and plunder of Karachi. Not one among them will resign, the shameless brute there power =,money hungry animals these are.

  4. We need to address Karachi problem in an extremely serious manner. Everybody needs to sit together and find an effective solution. Peace Conference is the need of the hour. It must be attended by all stake-holders. All political parties who claim to have any political base or interest in Karachi must participate. Asif Zardari, Nawaz Sharif, Altaf Hussain, Asfandyar Wali and all leaders of all political parties need to attend. Their second tier leadership participation will not work. Participation of Asif Zardari is essential because he leads the party in power, Asfandyar Wali must be present because ANP has a big stake and Altaf Hussain should also make it a point to personally attend because he is apparently the leader who has the biggest public following in Karachi. They should fear nothing but fear itself. If any leader cannot dare to visit a city which needs him, then that leader has no right to participate in our politics.
