Strike cripples Quetta

A complete shutter-down strike was observed in Quetta on the call of Hazara Democratic Party against Saturday’s killing of 11 people, including a woman, on Spinny Road. The provincial government had deployed thousands of Frontier Corps, Balochistan Constabulary, Anti-Terrorist Force and police personnel to maintain law and order in the city.
All business centres on Jinnah Road, Qandhari Bazaar, Liaqat Bazaar, Abdul Sattar Road, Prince Road, Fatima Jinnah Road, Masjid Road, Suraj Ganj Bazaar, Mission Road, Alamdaar Road and in other areas gave a deserted look on Sunday. The workers of Hazara Democratic Party set ablaze tyres on Spinny Road and forcefully closed the road for traffic.
Angry protesters shouted slogans against the terrorists and the government over its failure to give protection to the life and property of people. The police unfortunately instead of going after the culprits preferred taking six protesters under custody on the charges of forcing shops to shut down. A rally was also held in the provincial capital where speakers vowed to continue the protest until the culprits were not arrested.
Meanwhile, the Shia leaders appealed the people to remain clam and frustrate designs of the elements who wanted to create rift within the ranks of Muslims. They also declared a 40-day mourning to pay homage to the innocent victims.
