A prank SMS advertising job vacancies at the Islamabad Electric Supply Company (IESCO) misled a large number of people as they sent in their resumes and visited the company office in hope of finding employment.
An IESCO official told Pakistan Today that an unidentified person had sent out a fake SMS a few days ago saying that applications were open for several vacant posts at IESCO, after which a number of people, particularly youngsters, had started sending in their Curriculum Vitae (CV) to the IESCO administration. “IESCO received hundreds of applications, including some through postal and courier services, which is sad as these poor people’s money was wasted,” the official added. A teenager who wanted to apply for the post of meter reader, Muneer, told Pakistan Today, “I came here to submit my application for the job after receiving an SMS from the IESCO office.” Munir also said that reference of the IESCO administration had been mentioned in the SMS. He said he was disappointed when he came to know that the SMS was fake. IESCO Spokesman Farooq informed that some people had been spreading rumours that the posts of assistant lineman, meter reader, and bill distributor were vacant and people interested could submit their applications for these posts. He said that IESCO maintained a ‘disciplined manner of appointment’, “We cannot start appointments without fulfilling basic requirements such as advertising in the national dailies,” said Farooq.
