Justice (r) Wajihuddin Ahmed said on Saturday that the Supreme Court (SC) had backed off and compromised on its principled stand by giving the government more time to restore the establishment division secretary.
Talking to Samaa TV programme “Zer-e-Behas” hosted by Pakistan Today Editor Arif Nizami, Wajih said the SC ruling was a retreat and it could embolden the government in its “uncalled for” policy of confrontation. He said it has been a habit of the government to manoeuvre the investigations into high-profile corruption cases. He said that was why not a single politician could ever be persecuted for his or her corruption.
He cited the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) cases in this regard. When asked what if the government took SC’s orders as ‘vindictive’, Wajih said there had been squabbling about judges’ alleged partiality and that the SC had only been tough on the federal government and not the Punjab government. He said all that had been limited to the statements only as nobody ever bothered to move the courts against any alleged wrongdoings by the Punjab government.
Independent political and defence analyst Hasan Askari Rizvi also took part in the discussion. Rizvi said the recent Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) party elections, like any other party, were ceremonial and merely a formality.
