The army’s not it

Former Chief of Army Staff General Aslam Baig who was rewarded with a democracy medal by former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto and is responsible for creating IJI (using ISI’s and Mehran Bank’s money) to defeat her PPP in the election and having failed as a politician is now asking the Pakistan Army Chief to intervene in politics and ensure implementation of the Supreme Court’s decisions against the government to punish the corrupt and establish good governance.

I would like to ask a few general questions of the retired general here. Is he ready to guarantee that this time around the army establishment will be able to change the status quo? This is the same status quo which that they have been protecting and changing which will also affect their interests.

It’s not only the ‘bloody civilians’ who are corrupt but also many army officers whose hands are dirty. Why not first start with the armed forces? Why did the COAS Jehangir Karamat not provide the help needed by the Supreme Court when it was attacked by Nawaz Sharif’s PML?

The experience of the past has shown that military intervention and rule leave the country with more problems. Let the people of Pakistan decide who should rule them by their vote. Let them suffer if they are electing corrupt and incompetent leaders.

Civil society’s forces should put pressure on the government to strengthen state institutions and improve governance. Let each state institution function and perform its role according to the constitution of Pakistan. Let the rule of law be established by government which is its prime responsibility and not by the army.
