The strike of the Pakistan Fisherfolk Forum (PFF) continued on Friday and a large number of civil society activists, trade unionists and professionals visited the camp staged outside the Karachi Press Club. The campaign has been launched to draw the government’s attention against the community grievances, fearfulness, brutal acts of sea lords and negligence.
“If the government fails to arrest Haji Younus, his son Zulfiqar Younus and their supporters, the fisherfolk of Sindh will block the National and Super Highway after Eidul Fitr,” warned PFF Chairperson Mohammed Ali Shah.
He told the media that fisherfolk are living a stressful life because “sea lords” including Haji Younus and his son Zulfiqar Younus have blocked their traditional routes and barring them from entering their jetties. The fishefolk’s strike will continue today (Saturday) in which their community from different marine and inland waters will gather simultaneously in Karachi, Hyderabad and Sukkur to show their strength. The fisherfolk want the government to protect the mangroves forests along the 129-km long city coast.
