LCWU to establish Pakistan’s first barrier-free campus

Lahore College for Women University (LCWU) Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Sabiha Mansoor, while addressing an international seminar on Thursday, announced that Pakistan’s first Independent Living Center (ILC) in public universities would be established at the LCWU.
The management of the LCWU would sign an MoU with the Milestone and Mainstream Association International, Japan. The institutions would work together to design the LCWU campus such that a barrier free architecture of both the academic and administrative be achieved. The centre would also take lead in providing technical assistance to other universities and educational institutions in Pakistan for consultancy regarding barrier free campus designing. Sabiha appreciated the role of the Environmental Science Department for the initiating environmental awareness activities and research projects.
The one-day International Seminar on “Accessible Living Environment for All” was held at the LCWU in collaboration with the Mainstream Association International, Japan, Milestone Association of the Special Persons and Urban Development and Environmental Research Center (UDERC). The seminar was hosted by the LCWU Environmental Science Department. A delegation of the Mainstream Association International including Matsushima, Kirian, Sato and Shunji Kadaota addressed the seminar.
Japanese leaders from the Mainstream Association International, Osaka, Japan described the history of Independent Living movement in Japan and gave their recommendations to establish a barrier free living environment for people with disabilities in an educational set up in Pakistan.
