Foiling an attempt to smuggle arms and narcotics smuggling from the Tribal Areas to the famous arms market in Darra Adam Khel, the Kohat police claimed to have recovered a large quantity of arms on Friday.
Police officials said a raid team blocked the Indus Highway near Pak-Japan Friendship Tunnel after receiving information about a possible arms smuggling attempt. A suspected truck was signaled to stop and a detailed search led to the recovery of a large cache of arms and hashish.
The recovered arms included 80 Kalashnikovs, 39 pistols, 30 hand grenades, 18 repeaters, 32 rifles, 9,000 cartridges and 20 kilograms of hashish.
The driver and his aide were taken into custody, officials said, adding that a case had been registered and investigations were underway.
Although police are yet to find the reason behind the smuggling attempt, it is being generally believed that militants have been disheartened by the continuous military action and are looking to dispose their weaponry in the Darra Adam Khel arms market.
