The Supreme Court resumed the Haj corruption case on Friday after giving the government yet another 24 hours to reinstate Sohail Ahmed to his post of establishment secretary and submit Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani’s response to the courts concerned.
During a hearing of the Haj corruption case, Attorney General Maulvi Anwarul Haq told the Supreme Court that the government of Gilgit-Baltistan has refused to relieve Hussain Asghar from his position of inspector general of the region, a private television channel reported.
Gilgit-Baltistan’s chief minister has refused to relieve Mr Asghar from the position until a new inspector general is appointed in the region, Mr Haq said.
Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry inquired of Mr Haq if the transfer of Mr Asghar was legal and constitutional.
Mr Haq also told the court that he was not able to contact Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani over the relegation of Sohail Ahmed.
