President Zardari’s recent meeting with the Saudi King has been intelligently interpreted by our print media. Initially, it did not attract their attention which is understandable. Whatever has been speculated seems too good to be true. Our President over the last three and a half years has received international attention for all the wrong reasons. That is unfortunate but hard to deny outrightly.
In diplomacy, it matters a lot. I am not sure who represented the Ministry of Foreign Affairs but it could not have been Rehman Malik, the Interior Minister. The credibility of this meeting was given another blow by Mr Zardari for picking him to the talks with the Saudi Monarch. I think he needs better advice and should realise that neither he nor Rehman Malik is equipped to handle international diplomacy and for that matter internal diplomacy.
