Varsities should not impose decisions on academics: GCU VC

University administrations are not meant to impose their decisions on academicians, instead they have a better job of facilitating faculty members to put the university on a path leading to international acclaim, Government College University (GCU), Lahore Vice-Chancellor Dr Khaliqur Rehman said on Tuesday.
He was addressing a meeting with administrative and academic heads of the varsity at the NM Rashid Seminar Hall. “Motivated and dedicated faculty, disciplined environment and impressive infrastructure are prerequisites to become a world-class university,” Khaliq said adding that the meeting was convened to discuss and address the difficulties faced by faculty members and set a roadmap for strengthening the academic and administrative system of the university. The VC said that he believes in decentralisation of power, hard work and collective strengthen. He said that he would take all steps to motivate his colleagues and provide them a conducive and peaceful working environment so that GCU could be made of a hub of quality education and research activities in Pakistan.
He called on chairpersons to ensure that all machinery and laboratory equipment available in the university must be fully operational and any spare part or support system required for any equipment must be provided on war footings. Khaliq said that computing facility should also be ensured for all faculty members. He said that research should be given appropriate consideration in selection and promotion criteria of the university.
The VC listened to suggestions of all academic and administrative heads and pledged to provide them his all-out support. Senior faculty members imposed complete confidence on Khaliq’s leadership and hoped that he would raise the standards of education and research at the university. Speaking on the occasion, GCU Dean of Sciences and IT Dr Ikramul Haq said that Khaliq belongs to university service for the last 37 years and has done a lot for betterment of the teaching fraternity. He congratulated the VC on his appointment as 28th head of the GCU.
