PAC wants details of organisations enjoying tax exemptions

The monitoring and implementation committee of the Public Accounts Committee on Monday directed the FBR to furnish details of all organisations that had been given tax exemptions.
The committee, which met with Yasmeen Rehman in the chair to review audit report 2004-05 on the accounts of Ministry of Communication, was informed by audit officials that FWO and NLC were not paying tax on incomes to the FBR. Federal Audit Director General Gulzar Hussain told the committee that the Motorway Police and FWO had developed a row over traffic fines’ money amounting to Rs 350 million. Committee member Noor Alam Khan said the FWO’s computer system on toll plazas along the motorways was not working properly. While reviewing another audit objection of the Ministry of Communication, audit officials said that on Musharraf’s orders, NLC was awarded a Rs 390 million contract illegally in 2002. The PAC sought a report on the matter within a month. Federal Audit DG Gulzar Hussain told reporters afterwards that the Federal Board of Intermediate suffered a loss of Rs 13 million by transferring its accounts from one bank to another. He said the board paid Rs 280m to Sawan Garden Housing Society illegally for plots for board employees.
