Azad Kashmir Legislative Assembly has elected Chaudhry Abdul Majeed, who heads the Pakistan People’s Party in the state, as the eleventh prime minister of the state, private news channels reported on Tuesday.
Majeed got 35 votes while former prime minister Farooq Haider, who heads the Pakistan Muslim League-N in the state, managed to get 11 votes. Legislative Assembly Speaker Sardar Ghulam Sadiq did not cast his vote.
In his message of felicitation, Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani congratulated Majeed for being elected prime minister of the state. He hoped that the newly-elected premier would work selflessly for the well-being of the people of Azad Kashmir, regardless of the political affiliations.
The PPP leadership also announced Ch Muhammad Yasin as a senior minister of the state. Earlier, 46 elected members of the Legislative Assembly took oath in the session, chaired by outgoing speaker Chaudhry Anwar-ul-Haq.
In her separate message, Acting President Dr Fehmida Mirza also congratulated Majeed on his success as leader of the House in the Legislative Assembly. She extended warm felicitations to Majeed, and said that his election as prime minister was an evidence of trust and confidence of the Kashmiri lawmakers reposed in his leadership.
