A soldier was killed on Sunday morning in heroic fashion after he helped foil an attempted suicide attack against the armed forces in the Chagmalai area of South Waziristan. Sources said a mobile patrol party of the armed forces was on routine patrol in the area when soldiers spotted a suicide bomber. They intercepted the bomber and ordered him to stop and surrender but he made a beeline for the soldiers, upon which they opened fire on him. The bomber was killed before he got close to the party, but his suicide vest exploded nonetheless, killing the soldier who had shot him down.
Local official Saifur Rehman told AFP the bomber had come on foot but failed to detonate his explosives-laden vest. “A guard shot him and he exploded. One soldier was martyred due to splinters. There were no other injuries,” said Rehman.
