The constitution is the sprit of the country and judiciary is the soul, but both were crushed by the military dictators in the past. I can prove that decision to hang [Zulfikar Ali] Bhutto was a judicial murder, former Sindh governor and eminent lawyer Justice (retd) Fakhruddin G Ebrahim said on Friday.
He was speaking as the chief guest in a dialogue on ‘Scope of constitutional provision and space for provincial autonomy’. The dialogue was arranged by the Centre of Civic Education in collaboration with the National Endowment for Democracy at a local hotel.
“The chief justices of all four provinces were ready to become acting governors on the second day of General Ziaul Haq’s coup. These chief justices agreed to work under a dictator and did not consult the Chief Justice of Pakistan. General Zia wanted to eliminate Bhutto, and for that purpose, he wanted to control the judiciary,” he said.
Ebrahim said that the time has come to speak the truth. The problems faced by Pakistan are due to the blunders committed by those who abrogated the constitution. “All are suffering because they are silent and not speaking on issues of the country,” he added.
He said that he has written a letter to the CBR chairman that carries a list about which lawyer is paying how much amount of tax. “This can expose those who are not paying their taxes properly,” he added.
He said that many people have been killed in Karachi but nobody has taken to the streets to condemn these murders.
