SC dismisses plea against former chief secretary

A division bench of the Supreme Court (SC) in Lahore on Thursday dismissed a petition filed by Azam Ikram seeking registration of a murder case against former Punjab chief secretary
Javed Mehmood.
The Sarwar Road Police Station station house officer (SHO) appeared before the court saying a challan had been submitted in the trial court and the trial would commence from July 23.
Upon this, the bench comprising Justice Jawwad S Khwaja and Justice Asif Saeed Khan Khosa dismissed the petition. The, court, however, sought an explanatory report from the Lahore sessions judge to apprise the court as to why the trial had been delayed for a year and a half.
The court directed the sessions judge to submit the report in the SC registrar’s office.
The petitioner had submitted that his father Muhammad Ikram was run over by the former chief secretary’s official vehicle while he was sitting in the car. He contended that after hitting his father at Sarwar Road, the vehicle fled leaving him injured on the road. He said his father might have been saved had the chief secretary and his driver taken him to a nearby hospital.
The petitioner said the police had not registered a first information report (FIR) against the former chief secretary and only mentioned driver Ghulam Murtaza’s name. Earlier, the Lahore High Court had dismissed Azam’s petition to add Javed Mehmood’s name to the FIR.
