An insight into the history of developed countries reveals that not only these nations have worked hard to attain the “developed” status, but have also successfully gotten rid of old and unjust laws.
The revival of Police Act of 1861 in Sindh came as a surprise for everyone. This development points towards the failure of the political and civilian administration in maintaining the law and order situation in Karachi and its adjoining areas.
The Police Act 1861 is an obsolete act like many others being followed in Pakistan. The Police Ordinance of 2002, was an excellent effort to improve policing standards in Pakistan, on the other hand, revival of the century and a half old act has disregarded the efforts of those who worked endlessly for the implementation of the ordinance.
The administrative machinery of Pakistan is in a sorry state, marred with corruption and inefficiency. The role of some civil society organisations in advocating for police reforms and other improvements is highly appreciable and is the only hope left with the general public.
