Expanding the scope of investigation against its disgraced MNA Anjum Aqeel Khan, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) decided on Wednesday to issue him a show-cause notice.
A PML-N meeting chaired by party chief Nawaz Sharif in Murree reviewed the inquiry committee’s report on Aqeel’s escape from police custody. A source in the PML-N said apart from the decision to issue the notice, the party leadership also decided to expand the scope of the investigation against the arrested MNA and include the probe on charges of corruption leveled against him in the National Police Foundation (NPF) case along with others.
The notice stated that the committee constituted by the PML-N to investigate the events of July 15 at Shalimar Police Station had considered all facets of the issue and required Aqeel to provide reasons for his failure to “exercise leadership and return to the police station immediately” after a crowd of supporters had forcibly removed him from police custody, and for his arrest and facts about his alleged involvement in the NPF land case being investigated by the Federal Investigation Agency. The notice also asked Aqeel for a written reply, which should reach the committee before July 30.
The PML-N also suspended the party membership of eight members, namely Malik Rabnawaz, Malik Akhtar, Rana Muhammad Zaheer Khan, Muhammad Sajid Abbasi, Malik Mustafa, Raja Nasir Mahfooz, Yasir Abbasi and Fayyaz Jatt.
