The results of a latest Gilani Research Foundation survey carried out by Gallup Pakistan has indicated that the proportion of Pakistanis who feel pride in their nation dropped drastically since the time of the country’s 50th anniversary. In a survey, a nationally representative sample of men and women from across the four provinces were asked the following question: “How proud do you feel about calling yourself a Pakistani?” 62% said they are very proud to be Pakistani, whereas 24% replied that they were somewhat proud. Another 8% felt no pride in being Pakistani while 5% said they were ashamed.
National pride is still high but has seen a significant decline over the last decade. In 1998, a year after Pakistan’s 50th anniversary, a nationally representative sample of men and women from across the four provinces were asked the following question: “How proud do you feel about calling yourself a Pakistani?” 79% said they felt very proud – a proportion significantly higher than the response in 2011. Back then only 7% said they felt no pride or were ashamed to be Pakistani; the figure has now risen to 13%.
