The Pak-Iran bilateral ties keep a unique importance in the history. Iran was the first country that recognised Pakistan as an independent state after independence. Similarly, Pakistan was the first country in world, who acknowledged the Iranian government after the Iranian Revolution in 1979. Both countries supported each other in general and during their tough times in particular.

For further strengthening the bilateral relations, Pakistan’s President visited Iran twice in less than one month. First he went in sixth International Conference on Global War on Terrorism (GWOT) held on June 25-26, 2011, in which Af-Pak-Iran discussed various challenges declared terrorism as common enemy and to counter it as communal strategy. For follow up and strengthening bilateral relations with Iran, Asif Zardari visited Iran again on June 16, 2011.

Enhancement of Pak-Iran trade is a necessity nowadays. We must work together to implementations the Preferential Trade Agreement concluded in 2006 and a bilateral Pakistan-Iran Free Trade Agreement may also be considered. It is necessary to start free trade that will bring a significant improvement and development for both the countries.

In recent visit Mr President proposed that “trade between the two countries be conducted in local currency, and not the dollar, to curb smuggling”. To solve the issue of energy crisis that Pakistan is facing since many years, Iranian President assured that by the end of 2012 Pak-Iran gas line project will be completed and that Iran was ready to reinforce its cooperation with Pakistan in every field.

Maturity in foreign policy will help Pakistan build its society and bring development. Also good relations with neighbouring countries will be fruitful to maintain stability and peace in the region.
