The law and order situation in the troubled area of Lyari would be brought under control soon so that the Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Medical College there could be upgraded to the level of a university, Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah said on Tuesday.
The chief minister said this at a presentation on the progress of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Medical College Lyari Karachi held at the Chief Minister’s House. Shah said that the prime motive of the government is to spread education, particularly in the field of medicine, in every nook and corner of the province, and with this vision, President Asif Ali Zardari is very keen to develop the Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Medical College Lyari.
“This would provide youth with the latest medical teaching and learning facilities, particularly those belonging to less developed areas of the province. Shah expressed his satisfaction over the work being carried out at the college and the admissions achieved so far.
He hoped that the college would soon be approved and recognised by the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC).
Principal and project director of the college, Prof Iqbal Ahmed Memon lauded the role and efforts of the chief minister and said that without the latter’s support, it was not possible to successfully establish the college.
He said that there are 13 faculties in the college, seven for chemical and six for medicine/clinical fields. Professor Memon added that as per initial requirement, six demonstrators are working in the college. He also said that a team of the PMDC visited the college and has agreed to approve and recognise it.
He said that admission process for first year has successfully been completed with a quota fixed for Lyari, Keamari, Bin Qasim, Malir and other areas. Shah also accepted the invitation to visit the college. Later, the principal of the college, on behalf of faculty members, presented a shield, ajrak and a Sindhi cap to the chief minister.
