UNODC chief praises Iran’s anti-drugs efforts

The UN office on drugs and crime (UNODC) praised Iran’s anti-narcotics effort, urging other countries to follow its example, as its chief travelled to Tehran for a three-day visit. “Iran has put in place one of the world’s strongest counter-narcotics responses,” UNODC director Yury Fedotov said in a statement. “Its counter narcotics efforts, good practices and concerns deserve the acknowledgment of the international community,” which should “follow suit,” he added. Some 89 percent of global opium seizures and 41 percent of heroin and morphine seizures occur in Iran, according to the UNODC.
