In what turned out to be the climax of a day-long hide and seek between police and PML-N MNA Anjum Aqeel, the absconding lawmaker caved in to political and legal pressure, ‘surrendering’ at the Kohsar police station on Saturday evening. Aqeel’s supporters had on Friday night forcibly rescued him from police custody and the lawmaker had been missing since. However, the Islamabad Police said they arrested Aqeel when he was heading for a press conference and his contention that he had surrendered was baseless.
Police shifted the lawmaker to Shalimar police station where several cases of land disputes and other nature have been registered against him. Inam Minhas, Aqeel’s lawyer, told reporters that his client was being politically victimized. He said some people had forcibly picked him up and pushed him into a car and it was wrong to claim that he had escaped from police custody.

Committee: Earlier on Saturday afternoon, PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif formed a party disciplinary committee to decide Aqeel’s fate. Raja Zafarul Haq will head the committee which comprises Khurram Dastagir, Dr Tariq Fazal and Nuzhat Amir Sadiq. They will present a report to Nawaz in a couple of days. The lawmaker’s highhandedness of the law invited widespread criticism from the PPP as well as angst of party colleagues. On Friday, Shalimar police had registered an FIR no 115 against Aqeel on a complaint by Shabahat Ali, a resident of Sector I-8/4, filed in 2010. Shabahat alleged that Aqeel had taken Rs 950,000 from him against the sale of a plot, which was never handed over to him. The PML-N MNA is also the main accused in the Rs 6 billion National Police Foundation land scam.
On Saturday, Interior Minister Rehman Malik said lawbreakers had shown their power, and it was now time for the law to show its muscle.
Malik also criticised the Punjab government, saying those sitting in the power corridors in Punjab should indulge in introspection before pointing fingers at others. He said PML-N had exposed itself through such acts.
Proclaimed offender: Meanwhile, a civil court declared Aqeel a proclaimed offender in a fraud case.
Civil Judge Rai Liaquat Kharal had earlier issued his arrest warrants in a fraud case registered with the Shalimar police in 2010, Islamabad Inspector General of Police (IGP) Bin Yamin told reporters.
He said around 200 people were involved in the incident and the police had started a search operation.
Also on Saturday, an anti-terrorism court (ATC) remanded 11 PML-N workers in police custody for five days and sent 21 others to Adiala Jail on a 14-day judicial remand for their alleged involvement in the armed attack on Shalimar Police Station.

  1. It was a wrong act worth taking judicial action.PPPZ government is exploiting it against ML-N to dilute the massive killings by target killings obviously by PPP-Z,MQM,ANP in Karachi last weak.Never once a target killwers or bathakhor was apprehened in last 45 months or 27 years after MQM was created. In the lust of power-kursi,unlimited illegal wealth, the crimes of PPPZ,MQM,ANP are buried under 'mumafat' on the thousands of dead bodies.Even MQM blinddare not talk on target killings if it does not suit MQM.100000% more poisonous tirades were oped against Nawaz Sharif,Punjab with decent response by MLN.But Z,Mirza STATEMENT THOUGH UNDESIRED WAS NOT A GOOD EXCUSE FOR mqm TO HAVE JKILLED DOZENS OF INNOCENT POOR and much before his speech, the killing spree to to gain political gains was already on and much before that thousands have been killed by above cursed coalition withiout any prosceution and Karachi MQM TV channels, anchors, staff giving all such anti nation guesome acts as proof of MQM innocence.Thety are equall criminals in this urban terrorsism.

    • I can only agree on one point with you and that is about media and Police. Both these institutions including judiciary is toooooooooo afraid to come up with iron hands on those who are involved in what we all are witnessing in Karachi. It is a game of power lust which does not sees who is who. It needs to be stopped. The same is going on in Punjab where terrorist nurseries are flourishing and no one is prepared to deal with them amicably (both police and judiciary).
