Hearts stop as matric results’ deadline nears

Matriculation students are nervous as the Punjab Boards of Intermediate and Secondary Education are all set to declare the results on Thursday. Students are seeking career advice with the belief that the results would leave a huge impact on their future.
About 0.2 million students appeared through BISE Lahore in the exams held earlier this year. Students interested in Fsc pre-medical or engineering have already joined pre-Fsc classes in the various academies. The top mark getting boys will compete for the admissions in the Government College University and the Forman Christian College whereas girls would battle to book seats in either Kinnaird College or the Lahore College for Women University.
Although BISE uploads the results on its website but due to the over burden on the website students find it difficult to get the result from the site.
Students have also raised their concerns over the increasing fee of intermediate colleges claiming that there was a time when the fees of all the top colleges were affordable now the situation was different as only purely public colleges offer affordable fee but offer a lower standard of education.
Parents of students are also waiting for their matriculation result hoping their child gets top position in the exams. Some families also arrange special functions to celebrate the success of their child. Sweet shops are also crowded on the result day whereas students arrange hangouts with their friends to celebrate the achievement.
Students waiting for the result are also consulting with their parents and teachers about the future career prospects. Students claim that asking for the result to from someone possessing the result was the most difficult time period and one feels nervous opening it. Various incidents have been reported of suicide attempts after marticulation results.
Students getting extremely anxious as some of them still confused over their future plans and waiting for the result to finalize the decision. Students consider various factors while selecting a college including its fee, location, standard, facilities, reputation and the faculty.
The mushroom growth of private colleges over the last few years have made easier access for the students, most of these colleges also offer scholarships depending on the marks of
the students.
A student who appeared in the matriculation exams, Arsalan Anwar claim that those times were gone when you just had to get first division for a better career but now you have to get around 85 % not only to enter into your favourite college but also to improve your merit calculation after the intermediate exams for the admission in a professional college.
Public Relations Officer (PRO), BISE Lahore Qaiser told Pakistan Today that Lahore Board was ready to announce the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) results and said that the ceremony to honour position holders would be held on July 21st, 2011.
As far as the results of 2010 are concerned girls topped in Lahore, Multan, Bahawalpur and Gujranwala boards whereas in Sargodha, Rawalpindi, Faisalabad and Dera Ghazi Khan Boards, boys made their presence felt by topping in the exams.
Attractive prizes for the position holders ask the intelligent students to struggle for the top positions. Students criticizing the standard of public colleges said that they need to get extra help other than their colleges.
A school teacher, Shahzad said that Matriculation result had always been remembered and it was even considered in the CV. He said that though he had done masters but the people meet him always prefer to ask him about his matriculation marks.
Students appeared in the exams said that they had to sit in the examination halls amidst worst load-shedding which might effect their result. They claimed that sweat used to drop on the papers, leaving bad impact on the examiners. Intense load-shedding also affected the preparation of the students.
Race to get admission in the prestigious intermediate college is the foremost desire for most of the students. Students want to be called as Ravian, Formanite and Kcite claim that they would struggle to get admission in their favourite college even if they had to switch their subjects.
