Pakistan’s tennis star Aisamul Haq Qureshi formally got engaged on Saturday with Faha Makhdum at a local marriage hall in an impressive ceremony. Apart from friends and family members of Aisam and Faha, a large corps of mediamen were present on the occasion to cover the engagement.
British-based Pakistani girl Faha Akmal Makhdum expressed her delight on the occasion. “I feel very happy to be engaged to Aisam. It’s the happiest moment of my life,” said Faha in a brief talk.
The couple is likely to get married on December 16, five months from now. Aisam, who is currently Pakistan’s top tennis player, is the only Pakistani to reach the final of a Grand Slam partnering with Indian Rohan Bopanna.
Faha lives in Ipswich and has completed her BSc Hons in Psychology from the University of Essex and MSc in Therapeutic Counselling (BACP accredited).
She has worked for the Pakistani High Commission in England and also practised as a trainee counselor for Stepping Stones East in 2010.
There were no political personalities on the occasion as it was a family function. Prominent among guests were Pakistan Olympics Association President Lt Gen (r) Arif Hasan, former Pakistan Tennis Federation president Dilawar Abbas, Punjab Lawn Tennis Association president Rao Iftikhar, secretary Lahore Race Club Tariq Aziz and the officials of Model Town Club.
Aisam is the only star of the country in the game to have earned such glory in tennis. His mother Nausheen Qureshi was also a tennis player and represented the country in the Fed Cup, but the achievements of her son eclipse everyone else’s in the family. Aisam is grandson of Indo-Pak tennis legend Khawaja Iftikhar and with his performance he has inspired the younger family members into the game most notably Samir Iftikhar.
