Second capital?

If Muttahida Qauami Movement (MQM) is against the division of Sindh then who is behind the graffiti on the walls of different part of Karachi and Hyderabad demanding a separate province for Mohajirs.

The Urdu speaking who migrated from India in 1947 and settled all over the country are no more Mohajirs as their third generations is being born in Pakistan. They are sons of the soil on which they are born. They should not forget that Urdu was declared the national language by the founder of Pakistan, M A Jinnah.

So every Pakistani is speaking Urdu and in Punjab, the third generations hardly speak their mother tongue Punjabi and only know Urdu and/or English. It is only in rural area where the local language is spoken but all writing is in Urdu or English. Therefore, the demand for separate province on the basis of speaking Urdu is not justified.

It is unfortunate that the Urdu speaking community in urban Sindh is claiming that they are not accepted as sons of the soil. The political differences should be resolved by negotiation and not by the use of street power.

The MQM is considered a political party that often resorts to violence to assert their importance by calling strikes and paralysing Karachi, which is Pakistan’s hub of industrial and commercials activities.

But a solution to this situation must be devised. Karachi was the first capital of Pakistan. It is possible that its old status may be restored as a second capital of Pakistan under the direct administration of the federal government. This may provide a solution to the existing ethnic divide and law and order chaos.

The PPP government in the centre and in Sindh should take a decision in the national interest and ensure a permanent peace in Karachi.
