The Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) on Friday urged the Punjab government to issue orders of regularisation of 1,800 senior doctors until July 20 and remove hurdles being placed by the finance and regulation departments, otherwise, the association reserves its right to call 1,800 doctors to an all Punjab Doctors Convention with all options wide open.
This was announced at a press conference at the PMA House, Lahore by PMA Lahore President Dr Tanveer Anwar, Dr Izhar Ahmed, Dr Ashraf Nizami, Dr Shahid Malik, Dr Ehsanur Rehman, Dr Sabahat Habib Khan and Dr Salman Kazmi. The PMA said that Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif had already approved the summary of regularisation of 1,800 senior doctors and ordered the department to regularise the remaining contract doctors and postgraduate medical officers as APs, SRs and district specialists and the Lahore High Court also issued orders of regularisation of these doctors.
The health department completed the process of verification of all doctors from May 31 to June 16 and now when the process was in its final stages some “elements” in the doctors’ community were opposing the regularisation of senior doctors and were creating “unrest” in ranks of doctors.
These doctors had failed to stop the process of regularisation via court too and now they were trying to press the government to stop the process of regularisation.
The PMA alleged that these doctors, including Dr Tehsin Riaz, had themselves been regularised by efforts of the association’s long march in 2009 but it was condemnable that they were opposing regularisation of their senior teachers. The PMA added that principal of a public-sector medical college of Lahore was backing these doctors and trying to sabotage all efforts of the Punjab CM regarding regularisation of 1,800 senior doctors and leading this movement against the Punjab government.
