Key appointments

Indeed, misadventure in key appointments is messy. The price for misadventure is national and international humiliation coupled with poor governance. Unfortunately, the present PPP-led coalition government has messed up appointments to very important slots in the federal government.

It is beyond one’s understanding that who extends such bad advice to the incumbent government to appoint such people who do not stay with it in the heat of the moment. Now the Governor, State Bank of Pakistan has resigned. His resignation has not surprised many in this country.

However, it is in the best interest of the government to appoint competent people to all vacant posts. Be it the Wafaqi Mohtasib (Federal Ombudsman), a position lying vacant since long, or the Governor State Bank of Pakistan, or the President, International Islamic University, or the Chairman, Pakistan Press Council of Pakistan etc.

The president and the prime minister should appoint people who have proven their professional credentials and will not jump ship at the first sight of trouble. There is no more room for misadventures in key appointments. In my humble opinion such a move or misadventure in the appointments which matter would be an ill-advised step inimical to the interest of the elected government because there is a race against time and the government has to deliver what the people of Pakistan expects from it.
